Among the many provisions in the omnibus spending bill passed by Congress this week is one requiring the United States Mint to produce six new designs for the quarter one each honoring the District of Columbia and five American territories and commonwealths, including Puerto Rico after the popular 50 State Quarters program ends next year. The measure was added to the bill by Representative Jos E. Serrano, a Democrat who represents the South Bronx and is chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee that deals with financial matters. While the six new designees are not states, their people should be treated as equals as much as possible, said Mr. Serrano, the senior federal lawmaker of Puerto Rican descent, who acknowledged that his heritage had played a role in his advancing the provision. In addition to the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, the places to be acknowledged are the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas. Measures to extend the State Quarters series with coins for all six had passed in the House the last several years but had always languished in the Senate, an outcome that Mr. Serrano attributed to a traditional historical bias against the District and a sad indifference to the others. According to the Mint, nearly half of all Americans collect the state quarters. Mr. Serrano said that while he himself was not a coin collector, he had given the quarters as gifts to his grandchildren for several years. A spokeswoman for the Mint said Thursday that procedures for selecting subjects for the new quarters, and their design, would be posted online once President Bush signed the bill. She said the District of Columbia coin would be the first to appear, in 2009. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/21/wa...64cmvY72qEFaXQ |

Re: Mint to add 6 nonstates to state quarters lineup
More to sell to the public
I stopped buying from the mint when they started pumping out the comms like the post office pumps out stamps. Its become a big money pit with all the variations and set options they offer. |

Currency whores.

Re: Mint to add 6 nonstates to state quarters lineup
Washington on one side, Guam on the other.
Its a natural combination... |
Re: Mint to add 6 nonstates to state quarters lineup
I didn't realize it from reading the NYT article, but the latest Coin World is saying that all six new quarters will be minted in 2009.
Since the mint has been doing five every year since 1999, the six in 2009 will have lower mintages than the ones already done. :bear_angry: |
Re: Mint to add 6 nonstates to state quarters lineup
In legal terms, the US Possessions are equal to the 50 states, as it relates to taxation. Guam, Puerto Rico and DC are not technically states, they are possessions of the United States as are each of the 50 states So why not honor them, as there is no difference.

Re: Mint to add 6 nonstates to state quarters lineup
The state quarters program has been the most successful US Mint series ever and by a bunch. It's not too surprising that they would want to extend it or that the people who enjoy the program (such as myself) would like to see it extended. I've bought at least 2 sets of the silver proof each year, mostly of the 11 coin variety.

Will the Isreal quarter be coming out in 2009 as well?

But since Iraq is a defacto territory, we should have a quarter for them. Gitmo too. :sarc: |

Re: Mint to add 6 nonstates to state quarters lineup
Guam's a blast. Very warm. Nice beaches, taco bell, TGIF, the Micronesia Mall, all just 3 hours from Japan.
And yeah, since they, Puerto Rico, DC, etc. use the US dollar as their primary currency, and since they all pay the US taxes, it makes sense to give them their own quarter. |
Re: Mint to add 6 nonstates to state quarters lineup
I heard Israel is going to issue a NAU base metal dollar, Mexico and Canada on one side, and the FED building on the other. :D
